This discography is divided into five sections:
  1. A discography of releases from JG Thirlwell under his many variations on the Foetus name as well as other projects. These releases are listed in (approximate) chronological order.
  2. A section listing releases on which Thirlwell is credited as producer and/or remixer, as well as other "Guest Appearances", listed alphabetically.
  3. A section listing prior works and upcoming releases with insufficient information about these releases.
  4. A section listing verified unreleased projects; and as yet un-named projects (including future projects discussed at one time or another by Thirlwell, as well as much-rumored projects).
  5. A section listing "bootleg" audio and video live material in digital form.

Note:
While similar in name and origin, Fetus Productions is not the same artist as the various Foetus monikers. The same goes for Foetus Products Music, a music publishing company; and Foetus Features, a different musical entity entirely. Myriad other similarly-named entities and bands abound (including a GB-based garage band named Foetus which will surely cause confusion for a period of time).
If in doubt, give us a shout.

Aside from a test pressing with a white cover and included info sheets, there are 3 other cover styles for this LP. One was hand painted by Steven Stapleton and is generally thought to be an edition of 20 to 40 copies; another is commonly referred to as the "monster" or "sky pilot" cover and is generally thought to be an edition of 500 copies; and the third is commonly referred to as the "burned" or "immolated man(nequin)" cover and is generally thought to be an edition of 500 copies. The hand-painted version exists only due to the fact that there were more records than LP sleeves available at that time, and Stapleton (perhaps unknowingly) created a collectable by painting plain sleeves for the remaining records. Also coming to light is a promotional version, issued between the "monster" and "immolated mannequin" cover versions, which had a plain white sleeve and had 2 pages stapled to the inner sleeve: 1 page of artist info and 1 page of reviews.
The RRR cassette re-release is considered an "official bootleg", and the material allegedly varies from the original.

FOETUS ON THE BEACH
3xLP 1982 Self Immolation WOMB 6T33 GB
Notes:
This was never released nor recorded, but it is included here because it is listed as a "forthcoming release" on the cover of the "Deaf" LP and several earlier singles.
Also listed in one of the Self Immolation newsletters as being a forthcoming release due out in late 1989. As all the other forth- coming releases listed therein are from Jan. 85 to "mid '85", it is suspected that 1989 is a typo, and should read 1985.

Radio Sessions
        1982
"Wash It All Off", "Today I Started Slogging Again", "Clothes Hoist", "Ignorance Is Bliss" and "Halo Flamin' Lead" were recorded for this radio show in December 1982, which was never released. Some tracks were later remixed and released elsewhere, but "Ignorance Is Bliss" has never been released, meaning these tracks are only to be found on unauthorized copies of the show, which was broadcast in 1983.

The first Normal release came in a box-type package with a booklet; the second was a simple tape release with no label and with a j-card having the artwork on the front and the track listings on the back. The second Normal release was available strictly by mail-order on demand - it was not listed in their catalog.
The Hearsay... release was also a simple tape issue with a green j-card with artwork in the front rectangle and track info on the fold-out, and no label on the tape.
It is reported that another version exists which was a different type of boxed release, with the track listings taken from the booklet of the first Normal release and placed on the j-card, boxed, but with no booklet.

Clothes Hoist / Lust For Death / I'll Meet You in Poland, Baby / Hot Horse (listen) / Sick Man / Street of Shame / Satan Place / White Knuckles / Water Torture / Cold Day in Hell

Notes:
The Self Immolation/Some Bizzare LP was pressed in 2 editions. The first edition's cover was printed black after red resulting in a "more structured" look in the lines being parallel, whereas the second edition's cover was printed red after black resulting in a less structured look. Additionally, the first edition's label has a clean white background, where as the second edition's label is of a darker white, akin to used paper.

The PVC release of the LP includes a bonus EP with the following tracks as taken from the WOMB FGH 12.8 and WOMB UNC 12.7 releases (note that these tracks are also listed on the cover of the PVC CD, but do NOT actually appear on the disc):

Wash It All Off / Sick Minutes / Halo Flamin' Lead / Finely Honed Machine / Today I Started Slogging Again

The Canadian PVC LP+EP version is identical save for the lack of an insert.
The 2007 Some Bizzare CD release is digipack format, with remastered audio and re-worked artwork.

The PVC test pressing also includes the tracks:

Sick Man Edit (end of LP side 1) / Cold Day In Hell Edit (end of LP side 2)

...which are edited versions of the original tracks.
"Sick Man Edit" and "Cold Day In Hell Edit" are on the PVC LP and the Thirsty Ear CD too, but not extra listed.

Theme From Pigdom Come / The Throne of Agony / ! / Pigswill / Descent Into the Inferno / Enter the Exterminator / DI-1-9026 / The Overture From Pigdom Come / Private War / Anything (Viva!) (listen)

Notes:
The WOMB FIP 4 CD release was assembled in the GB, but the disc was actually manufactured in France.
A Self Immolation newsletter states this as forthcoming Mid 1985. 'Reflex' magazine's discography states the initial release was in Oct 1985.
The track "!" is actually the ~3 second cacophony at the end of "The Throne of Agony", and was incorporated into that track (track 2) on the Self Immolation/Homestead CD release, thus when playing that CD the player will indicate there are only 9 tracks. The Some Bizzare CD release is not guilty of this consolidation, and neither is the Thirsty Ear CD release.
"Pigswill" is mis-spelled on the Self Immolation/Homestead CD release track listing on the disc itself, as "Pigswell".
"Anything (Viva!)" may or may not refer to a girl Thirlwell had a crush on in elementary school, named Viva. In one interview he stated he would serenade her with renditions of Elvis Presley's "Viva Las Vegas." The 2007 Some Bizzare CD release is digipack format, with remastered audio and re-worked artwork.

Tape issue includes above tracks multiple times (minus CD-only tracks).
'Reflex' magazine's discography states the initial release was in Nov 1986.
The first GB edition featured the "deluxe cover", consisting of the wings on the cover being of a metallic foil, a cardboard inner sleeve, and a sticker on the cover stating it featured "Clint Ruin SFOTW Roli Mosimann".
The first DE edition featured the same cover sans sticker with a soft inner sleeve.
Subsequent re-issues on vinyl featured a simple cover where the wings were just a silver color.

Slut / The Universal Cesspool / Bruisin Chain

Notes:
Marc Almond credited for lyrics & vocals; Clint Ruin credited for music, instruments, direction, and production.
'Reflex' magazine's discography states this was released in Feb 1988.

The Some Bizzare CD re-issue was renamed MARC ALMOND & FOETUS 'Violent Silence*Flesh Volcano', which seems to be a mistake or perhaps a poor joke, as "Violent Silence" is from a different Marc Almond release. The Some Bizzare CD re-issue track list is:

Flesh Volcano/Slut / The Universal Cess Pool / Bruisin Chain / Love Amongst The Ruined / Burning Boats / A Million Manias / Beat Out The Rhythm On A Drum

"Love Amongst The Ruined" taken from the 'If You Can't Please Yourself You Can't Please Your Soul' various artists LP (see below). "Burning Boats" credited on the Some Bizzare CD re- issue as being from "The House Is Haunted (By The Echo Of Your Last Goodbye)", (see MARC ALMOND below), and also appears on the the ANNIE HOGAN 'Plays Kickabye' 12"EP (see below). "A Million Manias" credited on the Some Bizzare CD re-issue as being from the MARC & THE MAMBAS 'Torment & Toreros' release, which is incorrect, as this version is the 10:16 version. Suspicion is that it is the "MultiManiaMix" from the MARC & THE MAMBAS 'Torment' 12", but without timing it one cannot be sure. Thirlwell does sing background on both versions, though. "Slut" is a re-edited version of SFOTW's "Smut" from the 'Ramrod' 12" (see below), or vice-versa. Note that on the 'Slut' 12" side 2 plays at 33 RPM; the tracks on the CD are the 45 RPM versions, and in this form "Bruisin Chain" is a re-edited vocal version of the FOETUS ALL-NUDE REVUE "Rattlesnake Insurance" from the 'Bedrock' release, and "The Universal Cesspool" is a vocal version of the first half of "Diabolus In Musica" from the same release (the second half being used on the soundtrack to LYDIA LUNCH's 'The Gun Is Loaded' video).

The Thirsty Ear CD re-issue, released 10 Feb 1998, also changed the artist credits to MARC ALMOND & FOETUS, though the title remains intact. The change is due to the added tracks from Thirlwell + Marc Almond collaborations (as opposed to the Almond tracks that appeared on the Some Bizzare re-issue), which are:

Love Amongst The Ruined / Burning Bloats / A Million Manias / Beat Out The Rhythm On A Drum

Note that "Burning Bloats" is from the ANNIE HOGAN 'Plays Kickabye' 12"EP, (see below) and was titled "Burning Boats" (sic).

Notes:
Danceteria issue has a gatefold sleeve.
The first edition of the GB CD was assembled in the GB, with the CD actually manufactured in Switzerland.
The inspiration for "English Faggot/Nothin' Man" came from a harassing message Thirlwell received on his answering machine.

* appears only on LP releases

Notes:
Some versions of the first plain black vinyl LP issue included a photocopied track listing.
Second LP release (RIFLEPIC 1) is a double picture disc.
This is an "official bootleg" release (aka an "auto-bootleg").
"Hate Feeler" is actually a cover of the Alex Harvey song "Faith Healer", which also appears (under it's real name) on the 'Male' live release (listed below).

'Reflex' magazine's discography states the initial release was in Mar 1989.

After its initial release, Jungle records released 2,000 copies in 1988, and 500 more on June 29th 1996, in the double LP picture- disc format.
An unauthorized CD re-issue happened near the end of September 1996, by Jungle, which was almost immediately halted.
Of interest is that side D of the double-picture disc can be used as a clock, if one finds clock innards to install on the back side. Unfortunately, side D was also mis-printed during the some of the 1988 and 1996 pressings, resulting in about 1/6 of the image missing.

In 1998, Jungle re-licensed the material to Invisible, who issued their own re-release and for reasons unknown did not include the track "Private War/Anything (Viva!)".

Ever since the original release, one of the sleeve panels has been backwards (suspected is one featuring Japanese typography, but Thirlwell has never stated which one).

Notes:
This release is a collection of previously released material (some remixed/edited, as indicated by * ) and new/unreleased material (as indicated by % ).
Initial GB LP releases included a promotional poster.
Initial US pressings included a Wax Trax! press kit, with a brief biography and 8"x10" glossy black & white promo photo.
'Reflex' magazine's discography states the initial release was in Apr 1990.
The Wax Trax! test pressing is frequently spotted with the 2 discs separated, but was in fact a 2xLP pressing.
On CD issues, the track "Anxiety Attack" is shorter than the 5:44 duration listed in the liner notes, whereas the LP and CS releases feature the full 5:44 version. The CD version, at 5:09, was edited at the beginning and end, most likely trimmed to allow fitting it and the other tracks on a single CD.

"Iris Evergreen" is actually another "Verklemmt" mix, originally titled "Verklemmt - Iris Evergreen Monotomix" when 'Void' was slated for release on Sony; the title was changed for the final release.

"Friend Or Foe" also appears on 'Gash' (see above).

Notes:
Earlier reported as a release by pragVEC, this is technically a compilation album. It was also erroneously reported that Thirlwell was a member of one of the groups involved, pragVEC, which turns out not to be the case.

This from Sue Gogan, original member of pragVEC and Spec Records interest:
"For historical correctness let it be noted that pragVEC was Gogan, [Nick] Cash, [David] Boyd and [John] Studholme. Jim played on the tracks credited to Spec Records and also Vince Quince and the Rialto Ballroom Detectives."

This Thirlwell work pre-dates all of his Foetus material. He is credited with "wasp, vacuum cleaner, alarm clock, vocals" (Wasp being an early digital synthesizer - Thirlwell is pictured holding said Wasp in the album cover photos).

A recording session Thirlwell did with Jad Fair and his then 8 year- old son Simon Fair. Thirlwell programmed a drum machine and played some sampled sounds live while Simon improvised lyrics, at one point repeatedly screaming "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!" while Jad played tambourine (or similar). Whether released is unknown; it's possible that Don Fleming was producing this session. An issue of Option magazine ca. 1993 has a blurb about this, but I have been unable to find that particular issue - if anyone has it please pass along the particulars.

4: UNRELEASED PROJECTS:
CASPAR BROTZMANN
(studio works)
        19??
On occasion one reads that Thirlwell and Caspar Brotzmann planned to collaborate, and while they did get together on several occasions, in one case an album with Diamanda Galas getting to the drawing board, nothing became of it other than a few minutes of recordings here and there.

HE
(studio works)
        19??
The band He was strictly a studio band, consisting of Thirlwell, Don Fleming, Jim Dunbar, & Rummager. They recorded studio versions of "Puppet Dude" and "Song for Sammy", which were tributes to Jim Henson and Sammy Davis Jr., who both died on the same day, as well as 2 other tracks. Never released, though the possibility exists, and "Puppet Dude" has been played live by Foetus incarnations on a number of occasions (and is a reworked version of Elton John's "Rocket Man").

LYDIA LUNCH
Hard Diamond Drill
?? 19?? ?? ?? ??

From one source:
Allegedly a Lydia Lunch record that was not released because it "sounded too much like Foetus", or something to that effect. As reportedly stated in Forced Exposure magazine - if anyone has this particular issue please pass along the specifics.

Thirlwell says, in effect:
Lydia and I talked about doing an album of that title. We (I?) started writing some songs, it was around the time I recorded 'Hole' - before, during or after, I do not recall. I remember I wrote an epic song called "Off The Hook" and an arrangement for it but nothing was recorded, just one of those things. Maybe one of the songs she did in the Immaculate Consumptives came out of that, in fact, but I don't remember what she did.

MALARIA (MAGNOLIA)
        19??
Aside from the Malaria work listed above, Thirlwell also collab- orated on a track with them titled "Creature Meets Creature", which is as of yet unreleased.

CARLA MARSHALL
Fire In The Mountain
        1993
Thirlwell remixed 4 versions of the track "Fire In The Mountain" - Defoliated Mix, Deloused Mix, Desecrated Mix and Devoured Mix. None have been officially released to date.

MURNAU
        2004
Thirlwell has played with live incarnations of Murnau (on sampler & keyboards; with Oren Bloedow, Ed Pastorini, and Brian Geltner), and Bloedow created an album's worth of material at Phillip Glass' studio in 2004, but nothing has yet to see light of day.

PCP HIGHWAY
Dreamless (tentative title)
        2000
Thirlwell remixed 4 tracks from this release, which was due in 2000 but was never released due to the band's demise.

SWELL MAPS
Train Out Of It
        1987
Credited with playing bass on one of the tracks when the release was still in demo version and on tapes being exchanged between Thirlwell and Swell Maps, but Thirlwell's contribution never made the final product.

WARD ME
??
No information at this point, but Thirlwell lists it on one of his own early personal discographies under the heading "Further work in some capacity or another."

WHITE ZOMBIE
(demos)
??
Credited with producing the demos of "I Am Legend" and "Thunderkiss '65", as well as two other tracks, that helped them get signed to Geffen/DGC. Being demos, they were never released. White Zombie's "Make Them Die Slowly" (1989 Caroline # CAROL (CD) 1362) and "La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Vol. 1" (1992 Geffen # GEF(D)-24460) both thank "Jim Thirwell" (sic). (Note also that "Make Them Die Slowly" is titled "Let Them Die Slowly" on the CD spine as well as the LP spine, but is titled correctly on the cassette j-card spine).

You're The Boss
Thirlwell and Dorit Chrysler from Halcion covered this track, an out- take from an Elvis film, but it will not be released. They also performed it live together on 14 Feb 1997 (Valentine's Day) in NYC, and it is fairly certain that an audience recording was made, but whether that shall see the tape-trading circuit remains to be seen.

UN-NAMED PROJECTS:

Film - "Where Evil Dwells (Nobody Ever Called Ricky Kasso An Asshole)" - a film by Tommy Turner and David Wojnarowicz that has yet to be completed since the death of Wojnarowicz, though Turner discusses completing it in the book 'Deathtripping - The Cinema Of Transgression' (Jack Sargeant, 1995 Creation Books GB ISBN 1-871592-29-1).

Film - "Stinkfist" - does this really exist? Photos from the "Stinkfist" release credited as by Wim V.D. Hulst from the motion picture of the same name.

With Page Hamilton (Helmet) - works for an un-named and apparently never completed project.

Frank Want with Saxophone on Rip It Up live 1983-03-31 at London Lyceum.

A quote from Mat Snow - New Musical Express:
"And, just as on TOTP, guesting on the Big Hit Single was none other than London’s greatest underground genius, Frank Want / Jim Thirlwell / Foetus. Edwyn introduced him with his customary pixie charm:
'He’s fucking useless, but he’s such a nice guy we had to have him play'.
Rip It Up possesses the most sublimely addictive chorus of the year, but Orange Juice opt for the scenic route rather than a comfy ride. Jim’s bizarre sax is part of that strategy and it works."
